I do not own The Essential Leonard Cohen anymore, not because it was bad (it was a nearly perfect introduction) but because I later purchased the Complete Albums Collection remastered by Mark Wilder and it became redundant. I remember trading my copy of the Johnny Cash comp because of the nasty BEEEEEEEP at the end of "A Boy Named Sue". But you're not missing much, since it included many live re-recordings when it came to his MCA years. I said so because I did track to track comparisons with the earlier 4-CD boxset The Country Roads Collection (1997). Neil Diamond's Essential is not available anymore 'cause his catalogue is now licensed to Capitol/Universal. The Essential: John Denver 3.0, along with the original 2-CD set of the same title, probably has the best remastering versions of most of John Denver's classics and hits. Yo-Yo Ma (the UK edition, with a different tracklist)Īlice in Chains (solid overview, but "Down in a Hole" is rather inexplicably missing). Toto (the European 2-CD set, with some single versions I couldn't easily find elsewhere) His version was featured in the end credits of The Guard. Santana (the one without the post-Supernatural material) In 1969, John Denver recorded a version of the song for his debut solo album, Rhymes & Reasons, and re-recorded it in 1973 for John Denver’s Greatest Hits. Ozzy Osbourne (be careful: many 2002 remixes on CD one!) Nilsson (excellent, both SQ-wise and track selection-wise) The UK/European one does not include River Deep, Mountain High) All of the hits are here ('Rocky Mountain High,' 'Calypso,' 'Back Home Again,' 'Annies Song,' 'Perhaps Love,' etc.), and the sequencing is linear and concise. James Taylor (includes both Warner and Sony eras, well balanced too) There is no shortage of excellent John Denver compilations, and RCA Legacys two-disc Essential John Denver collection doesnt disappoint. Jefferson Airplane (another highly recommended set) two single-disc comps (Alison Moyet, with three Yaz tracks licensed by Mute, and Paul Young) and a 3-CD set (Bruce Springsteen), the rest are all double CD anthologies.īarbra Streisand (nice, recommended career overview with two unique recordings at the end of the second disc)īob Dylan (the first EU edition, not the recently "revisited" one)
